Siding Installation Tips

What Is the Minimum Distance Between Siding and Grade?

If you have ever looked closely at the side of a property, you would have noticed there is a gap between the bottom of the siding installation and the ground. Maybe you have wondered why it was like that. If so, this article will explain the minimum distance between the siding and the floor.

In most cases, siding clearance must be approximately 6-8” from the floor. If it is done incorrectly, the siding is too close to the ground, which in turn is an open invitation for the likes of pests, insects, and other forms of damage. However, when it is done properly, your siding can last for years, protecting both your home and family.

No matter what kind of siding material you decide upon, it is important to keep the correct clearance from the soil’s grade level. This is what is referred to as “foundation exposure” because the concrete foundation you see will determine how far the soil level is below the siding.

Vinyl is still considered the most popular siding with homeowners throughout the United States. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but it is also durable and the most affordable material available on the market today.

In regards to clearance, vinyl should be 6 to 8 inches above the ground. If that is not feasible for any reason, then any clearance is better than none at all. This clearance, which is referred to as foundation exposure, is to prevent water from gaining access to the structure of the building. Even if you have the best drainage system, the rainy season in the northeastern United States can often overwhelm a home, so it is best to have the extra protection of vinyl siding ground clearance. If your foundation, though, is more exposed, it will make termites and other pests a great deal easier to detect.
